Dear my younger brothers and sisters,
It is nearly May, the end of the school year. Looking forward, next year, you will be seniors in school. I am glad to take this opportunity (these 5 min) to share my experiences and give you some advices of your secondary school life. Well, I am not standing here to promote you about the benefits being a prefect, like a sales. At this point, you have a lot of choices. No one can matter your choices. These are the five things I want you to know to be, or not to be, a prefect.
1. Prefects are the bridge between the school and the students. We value all of your opinions.
The role of prefects are authorized by teachers to maintain the school’s discipline, and be the key leaders of students to reflect opinions to the school authority. We are both the representatives of the school and each of you. For the school, we need to perform duty such as daily uniform inspections, escorting visitors and parents in special occasions like parents day to upholding the school’s image. For students, we are invited to the consultations of school affairs, like the Block E Development project, and bring in students’ voices to the school.
2. Why I join the Prefect Team - It’s all about serving and giving myself a meaningful six-year secondary school life
I was planned to become a prefect since I was Primary 6. Part of the reasons was that I was proud of being a prefect and a great sense of responsibility. (I was the head prefect in my Primary school and I thought wearing the strap (風紀帶) was very cool). Now, I am wearing the prefect badge. But all of this was not about title. The most important is about serving and giving. I was very grateful what I have received from the school, and I thought that it was the right time to serve like what the schools and my elder brothers and sisters’ did.
3. Giving and Taking - What does being a prefect take me? Being a prefect sacrifices my lunch hours and leisure time spending with your friends and family.
In the first year of being prefect, I was being isolated by my classmates because of rating someone out on the use of mobile phone (which is forbidden in my school). I was even being kicked out from the class whatsapp group, giving me challenges on friendship. Of course this is an extreme case. But if you try to look at an alternative angle, this makes me reflect on a better way to get along with people, or the way I should deal next time.
4. You learn not to blindly follow the school rules, instead, you develop a stronger moral sense and gain a greater capacity of maturity handling interpersonal conflicts
We learn how to “turn a blind eye” at the right place and right time. You know when to make an exception, like you will give your classmates a warning instead recording their names directly when you find his or her pants or dress is too short because of seasonal changes so ask them to buy another one. You will not take away someone’s phone when he or she is recording videos for his or her best friends’ birthday. You know how to be smooth and slick in establishing social relations.
5. Being prefects doesn’t mean you need to be perfect. But be responsible.
Our requirements of being prefects are having a B or above in overall conduct and a good attitude. Of course teachers have great expectations on us, I admit that I am not always meet their expectations. This month, I received a quarter of black mark not submitting homework on time. This time I received a D and 2 Cs in my core subjects in form test. The role of being a prefects urge me to be responsible for my studies and my conduct. And I am looking forward for a better self to do well in my studies.
Being a prefect help you step out your comfort zone, making friends from all forms and widen your social network. I do believe everyone are talented and potential to become an outstanding prefect. Don’t underestimate and limit yourself. I would strongly advise you to consider to take on some leading roles in school, for example, the house committee, the Guidance Prefect (which some of you already are one of them), the Student Association, school ambassadors, clubs and societies, or be part of the prefect family. You are capable of it. And we all trust in you. Fulfilling these leading role or not does not define who you are, but rather, you gain your life experience. The experience of being prefects is surely one of them.
The applications are opened until 7th May, Monday. Please fill in the application form and hand it to TICs, three of the deputies in person, or the collection box outside the prefect room. Applicants will be invited for an interview at the afternoon on 12th May, Saturday or any scheduled time. “We dear bare our missions with our vision”, and we want you to be part of our succession. Thank you!
Jessie Yeung
